When did it happend? 
The 1960 Chile earthquake occurred on May 22nd 1960 (19:11UTC). 

 

Where did it happen? 
 It occured in Southern Chile (35.9 S,74.5W),160 km off the coast of Chile, parallel to the city of Valdiviva. 

What happened?

 

The Great Chilean earthquake was the largest earthquake to be recorded during the 20th century with a magnitude of 9.5 on the Richter scale.  The earthquake proposed a sequence of foreshocks the previous day at 10:02 UTC (approximately 4) bigger than the magnitude of 7.0 and lasted about 10 minutes. Later causing a tsunami that rose up to 25 metres high on the Chilean coastline. This tsunami affected Southern Chile, Japan, Eastern New Zealand, Hawaii, Philippines, the Aleutians Islands in Alaska and South East Australia.  The succession of earthquakes that followed emaciated Southern Chile and shattered a 1,000 km section of the fault between 37 and 48 degrees South latitude.
