How likely is it that the disaster could occur again in the same location?

It is very likely that Chile will receive severe earthquakes in the future. Looking back at the past earthquake history, it seems that Chile has suffered through one or more quakes every year. The table on the right shows the multiple quakes that have occurred in 2014-2015. This research suggests that Chile is situated along an earthquake prone location, where they receive quakes of high magnitudes.

List of earthquakes that occured between 2014-2015

Chile experiences the worst earthquakes around the port of Valdivia as a result of having mountain ridges with higher elevation under the ocean floor than anywhere else. Higher elevation results in greater resistance, meaning the result of a bigger earthquake.

Chile is one of the few countries where three major plates meet, proposing a triple junction- the Nazca plate which is subducting underneath the South American plate and the Antarctic plate subducting beneath the South American plate. Chile has powerful quakes due to the very shallow angle (-5 to 15 degrees) of subduction caused by the Nazca Plate below the South American plate.
